Brodsworth Carbon Challenge, Doncaster

 PRP Architects

In 2008 a former colliery site in Brodsworth near Doncaster was selected for the third Carbon Challenge scheme. The challenge was to design a carbon neutral village that would meet Code for Sustainable Homes and BREAMM at an excellent rating. It would also help to meet the national target of zero carbon by 2050.

Within the scheme, homes, offices, commercial and industrial units all had to be carefully designed so that they would minimise heat losses and maximise solar gain during the winter and then vice versa during the summer. Energy production for the village also had to come from renewable sources located on the site.
